What are the differences then between systems?

Here are some common points for consideration when considering the right system for you.

  • Colour:

All the different system companies offer different colours as standard, these generally will range from 3-6 colours subject to the manufacturer. Standard Colours are offered at no additional charge. Choosing a standard colour is a good way to keep your cost down. Aluminium systems can however be offered in any RAL colour of your choice including options for Dual Colour, that’s one colour inside and a different colour outside. If you select a non-standard colour or a dual colour system you can expect to pay a paint-set up surcharge and expect extended lead-times over the standard colours of which the system profile is often in stock for a quicker manufacturing time should your project need this.

  • Thermal Efficiency:

Different Systems will boast different U-Values. A U-Value is the measure of any window or door systems thermal effectiveness. You will learn that different systems have varying U-Values.

  • Why are they different across different systems?

Most of the thermal effecieny in any window or door system comes from the glazing. This often constitutes around 80% of the overall area. In todays market there are a number of options to to consider around the type of glass you can specify. You would have course heard of the options of Double Glazed and Triple Glazed. Triple glazed sealed glass units offer a higher U-value than conventional double glazing, however not all door systems are designed to accommodate triple glazed units, some just double glazed. The measure in a double glazed 28mm unit is around 1.3 U-value. Triple Glazed units can reduce down to as low as 0.8 U Value. These are what as known to be centre pane U-values. When added to any system the overall U-value of glass and system will give a new U-Value. This is called the overall U-Value. You will find clear labels on our range of what U-values you can expect to find on each of our systems.

  • Profile Dimensions:

Each of our Bi-folding doors systems will have a unique set of profile dimensions. Different systems will give you slightly varying appearances aesthetically. The most common request is for a slim door frame. The slimmer the frame the more glass area you will achieve, more glass more natural light. The majority of our systems are very similar in what we call “Glass to Glass sight lines” These will range from 95mm to 122mm. This is the dimensions from the glass to glass in-between door panels.

  • Leadtimes:

Bi-folding Door systems between manufacturers can vary in there delivery leadtime. Our more mainstream systems can be manufactured and delivered in leadtimes as short as 2 weeks. Other more unique systems can take 8-10 weeks. Some decisions when it comes to Bi-folding Door selection are based around Lead-times dependent on the critical path of your own project. We can give you clear, accurate and concise lead-times for our entire range at your point of enquiry.

  • Handles and Hinges:

Different systems will have varying options for door furniture, handles, hinges etc.. Systems have been selected based on a preference of handle type, colour and appearance. We can be clear about all the options over all our systems to help give you a steer in the right direction.
