Laminated Security Glass – What are the benefits?

Laminated Security Glass is a more popular option in our glazed windows and doors than ever. Why? Its all about security in a nutshell. Laminated Glass is different to standard or toughened glass in its make up.

What is laminated glass?

Unlike ordinary glass, laminated glass is a safety and security glass that is made by sandwiching a PVB sheet (plastic interlayer) between two pieces of glass.

In the event of an attack, Laminated will hold all the glass in the frame, following even the most sustained attack, preventing the intruder getting in to your property.

Pilkington Optilam™ is the brand name for our laminated glass range. Pilkington Optilam™ is ideal for providing both impact resistance and security since it may break on impact but the glass is held in place thus preventing injury or intrusion.

Size Options

Laminated Glass also comes in different thicknesses which in turn will enhance the difficulty in breaking in.

6.8mm

8.8mm

10.8mm

As the thickness increases so does the weight. Different window and door fenestration systems will be able to accommodate different weights. We will be able to check this in detail for you when we have the full brief of your project.

Acoustic Properties

Laminated Glass also adds to the Acoustic Value of a window or door. What is Acoustic Glass? It is a specialist glass that considerably reduces noise levels.

All glass has some acoustic ability in terms of blocking outside noise.

The most effective way of increasing sound reductions is to use a bonded layer between two panes of glass - the bonded interlayer absorbs sound energy and prevents sound vibrations from traveling through the glass.
